Original Cover Artwork
Shakedown
$14,000
Original artwork by Norman Saunders for Ace Book D-17, Shakedown, by Roney Scott (William Campbell Gault) (1953). The paperback is a First Printing. A dramatic image of a beautiful woman, with two men fighting in the foreground. The artwork image shown is the full painting, which was edited for the book cover. Prolific artist Saunders is perhaps best known for his pulp paperback covers and the original 1960s Topps trading card series Mars Attacks. According to Saunders' son, David, an accomplished artist himself, the female model who posed for the painting, Ellene Politis, is actually his mother, who married the artist.
Original Saunders paintings are exceptionally scarce. Painting is professionally double-matted, at least 15"x18", and signed by the artist.
The book (pictured right) is included with the painting. Click on the image to view the artwork in another window.
